Kenya's tourism leadership and the Africa MICE Hub adopt a three-part commitment ahead of October's Africa MICE Summit in Mombasa.
Africa captures a small fraction of the world's meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions revenue against a market of more than 1.5 billion people. That gap was the starting point, not a footnote, when senior government officials, tourism boards, hoteliers, and investors gathered at the Trademark Hotel in Nairobi last week for the Africa MICE Investors & Stakeholders Round Table. The outcome was the Nairobi Commitment on Advancing Africa's MICE Industry, a continental blueprint that treats business events not as a hospitality sub-sector but as an investment and trade proposition.
The distinction matters. MICE travelers spend more, stay longer, and pull spending across aviation, venues, hospitality, and logistics in ways leisure tourism does not. Convened by the Africa MICE Hub under the theme "Convene. Connect. Convert," the round table was structured to move the conversation from potential to capital. from why Africa should compete for global events to how the continent finances the infrastructure and policy to win them.
Three Priorities, One Blueprint
The Nairobi Commitment sets three strategic priorities to guide the industry through the Africa MICE Summit 2026 and beyond:
Build the Stage: strengthen convention infrastructure, venues, and destination readiness.
Power the Ecosystem: advance technology, skills, and cross-sector collaboration.
Unlock Capital: attract investment through clearer policy, licensing, and partnership models.
That third priority carried the sharpest edge of the day. Sessions on investment surfaced the criteria investors actually apply to MICE destinations — economic fundamentals, political stability, air connectivity, ease of doing business, transparent policy, and access to skilled talent — alongside the financing structures likely to accelerate development: operator partnerships, franchise agreements, management contracts, and equity investment. The message to government and industry alike was direct: infrastructure alone does not win events; bankable, investable ecosystems do.
Government Commitment, Backed by a Named Convention Pipeline
CPA James Mwaura, CEO of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, represented Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano and confirmed the government's read of the sector as central to tourism growth, investment, and employment, with strategic infrastructure and enabling policy as the delivery mechanism. That commitment is not abstract — the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, Kenya Tourism Board, and KICC were joined at the table by the Association of Kenya Business Events, HospitalityEQ, and The Encore Hotel, alongside the Africa MICE Hub's own leadership.
"The Nairobi Commitment represents a shared vision for the future of Africa's business events industry," said Kezy Mukiri, Founder of the Africa MICE Hub and Convenor of the Africa MICE Summit. "By bringing together government, investors, and industry leaders, we are laying the foundation for stronger partnerships that will drive trade, investment, and sustainable growth across the continent." Who Was in the Room
The distinguished panel reflected the breadth of the coalition the Commitment is meant to mobilize:
CPA James Mwaura, CEO, KICC representing Hon. Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife
Mr. David Gitonga, Secretary, Tourism Development, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife
Fiona Ngesa, Deputy Director, Market Development, Kenya Tourism Board
Kezy Mukiri, Founder, Africa MICE Hub and Convenor, Africa MICE Summit
Mulemwa Moongwa, Director of Partnerships, Africa MICE Hub
Barry Clemens, Group CEO, HospitalityEQ
Jeffers Miruka, Secretary General, Association of Kenya Business Events
Jeff Mukolwe, General Manager, The Encore Hotel
The Road to Mombasa
The round table was the first of a staged pre-summit calendar built to convert commitment into capacity ahead of the Africa MICE Summit itself:
Nakuru Chapter Round Table — 13 August 2026
Incentive Planner Masterclass — 29–30 September 2026
Bidding for International Events Workshop — 30 September 2026
Africa MICE Awards Gala — 2 October 2026
Africa MICE Summit — 1–2 October 2026, Tembo International Convention Centre, Mombasa
The Summit will convene industry leaders, investors, and more than 100 solution providers for keynote sessions, an expanded marketplace, and curated B2B meetings the commercial follow-through the Nairobi Commitment is designed to set up.
The founding partner network behind the effort, Zuri Events, Tembo International Convention Centre, Tourism News Africa, the Association of Kenya Business Events, Kenya Airways, Safarilink, HospitalityEQ, and the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence, signals a public-private coalition with the reach to make good on the commitment. For a continent still capturing only a sliver of global MICE revenue, Nairobi's declaration is less a ceremony than a marker: the next test is whether Mombasa turns commitment into bookings.
